DIAGNOSTIC STUDIES
At the Tampa Back Institute, we offer comprehensive imaging study diagnosis. We require all new patients to bring in past radiology studies with them to their consultation. Doing so will allow us to best serve you. If you have not had any studies conducted, and are wondering if you should, please contact us.
Below are all the different kind of studies we review, and what those studies are used for.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

X-Ray

Computed Tomography (CT) Scan

Bone Densitometry (DEXA) Scan

Electromyograph (EMG)
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
MRI’s are a very powerful and useful tool. They use magnetic properties of our cells in order to depict the health of our bodies. MRI’s effectively reveal anomalies within soft tissue (muscle, ligaments, nerves, etc). However, MRI’s may not be as useful for hard tissue (bone) conditions. Moreover, because MRI’s use magnets patients with metallic or electrical implants may not be eligible for an MRI. Please contact us if you would like more information!
Computed Tomography (CT) Scan
CT scans can be looked at as “3-D X-Rays”. They use the same principles as X-Rays to get images, but they are able to get a more comprehensive view of the body. This is accomplished by layering many consecutive views on top of each other. CT scans, like X-ray’s, are excellent for observing hard tissue (bone) in patients. However, CT scans are not very useful for soft tissue malignancies. Furthermore, CT scans can be used for patients that cannot undergo MRI studies due to metallic or electrical implants.
X-Ray
X-Ray’s may be the simplest, yet most effective studies. While they are not as comprehensive as CT or MRI scans, they are incredibly quick and informative. X-Rays are often the very first line of defense, so to speak. However, if their simplicity may fail to provide enough answers. Therefore, MRI or CT scans may still be needed.
Bone Densitometry (DEXA) Scan
This study is used to diagnose bone density ailments, such as osteoporosis. Bone density ailments can lead to a host of spine conditions(link). If your physician suspects you may have a bone density condition, a DEXA scan could confirm the diagnosis. If you think you may need a DEXA scan, please contact us.
Electromyograph (EMG)
EMG’s are used to test the health of muscles and nerves. The procedure involves observing how well your nerves transmit signals to muscles. Being that your spine houses your bodies nervous system, this study may be required to diagnose the health of your spine.
